The Â鶹ÊÓƵ Department of Theatre and Dance will bring Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” to the stage Oct. 30 through Nov. 2 in the Studio Theatre.
Directed by guest artist Jen Onopa, the production promises a lively blend of sharp wit, mistaken identities and social satire. Performances run Thursday, Oct. 30 to Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
First performed in 1895, Wilde’s “Earnest” remains one of theater’s most enduring comedies. The play follows two friends who invent fictitious personas to escape their social obligations, only to find their deceptions spiraling into chaos. Featuring secret engagements, confused lovers and a healthy serving of cucumber sandwiches, the story offers a satirical look at the rigid manners and absurd pretenses of Victorian society.
The production features Â鶹ÊÓƵ theater students in leading roles and showcases period-inspired costumes, elegant design and Wilde’s signature mix of romance and ridicule.
